The East Longmeadow Rotary Club is a community service organization.  We are part of a global organization called Rotary International, which has more than 35,000 Rotary clubs around the world.  Collectively, we work to make lasting contributions in our local communities and around the world.  The Rotary motto is “Service Above Self.”
Our Club was Chartered in East Longmeadow in 1970.  Over the years, our Club’s Rotarians have been involved in a multitude of community activities that have enriched the lives of people living in East Longmeadow.  Our Annual Summer Concert Series is one example.  We are also involved in the East Longmeadow July 4th Parade, Fireworks, National Night Out, Taste of East Longmeadow and this year, the July 4th Carnival.  Other community activities have included a Dictionary Project for elementary school children, Children Easter Party at Wingate Nursing Home and an Annual Scholarship Program for East Longmeadow High School senior students.  Our Club’s efforts have reached beyond our community to the international community-for example, disaster shelters for Haiti after its earthquake and Feeding the Children Program in India.  I welcome you to visit our Rotary Display Trailer at each concert to get more information about our Club and its activities.

Our very own club Foundation chair was the speaker at last week's meeting and gave a thorough accounting of the incredibly vast ways that the foundation has impacted our world.  Perhaps the most noted is the near elimination of the dreaded polio disease.  This year, as we have done in recent years, Dawn is encouraging everyone to once again give what they can to achieve 100% participation by the club.  Thank you, Dawn, for an informative presentation.

The editor apologies for this late edition of The Gavel, however the annual hunting trek to Vermont in search of Bambi, shown above fully grown (yes, Bambi was a buck), limited the amount of time available for writing!  Despite several sightings of wilderness creatures (probably less than here), Bambi was spared.

Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

First. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

Second. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

Third. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;

Fourth. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace
through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Last call for your help... Rotarians have mobilized to help in Texas and Florida.  The club will match donations up to $500.  Right now we have $278.  Let's get behind the effort...the Board of Directors will be wrapping this up next week and sending our contributions to the Rotary districts handling the relief efforts.  Make checks out to our own East Longmeadow Foundation - 100% tax deductible.  See Peter Benton or Jim Rintoul.
